A Watchful Astronomy

Discover the profound insights of Paul Deaton in his debut poetry collection, Watchful Astronomy, published in 2017. Spanning 72 pages, this engaging anthology brings together a selection of his most compelling works, some of which have graced esteemed literary magazines and the earlier pamphlet, Black Knight (Eyewear). Deaton's poetry intricately explores the complexities of relationships, particularly the haunting presence of a challenging father figure, depicted as a 'wounded bear.' Throughout the collection, the father emerges in various forms—ranging from a vast, unfathomable mountain known as the 'Inselberg Father' to an impending thunderstorm—symbolizing the emotional tensions that shape our lives. Watchful Astronomy invites readers to reflect on the delicate balance of love and conflict, making it a must-read for poetry enthusiasts and anyone interested in the nuances of human connection.
